As South Africans, we have grown accustomed to water warnings in the last few years. We know as a part of our everyday life we need to be water-saving conscious.
We live in a country that is considered as water-scarce due to a number of environmental and manmade factors. The DWS (Department of Water and Sanitation) recently released its Masterplan in November 2019 to create a roadmap for how to move forward to 2030 and beyond for water saving in our country.
Water-Saving Hacks
Bucket showers
Using a bucket in the shower is a good idea because it means you can reuse the water collected. Keep your showers short and use the bucket water for flushing the toilet.
Greywater gardening
Reuse bath and shower water collected by a bucket for your garden watering.
Dont leave the tap running
Make sure taps are closed properly and that water is not running or dripping unnecessarily. Close the tap off while brushing teeth and save some H2O.
Do only full loads of washing and dishes
Wait for your laundry and dishwashing to reach capacity before you wash. If you are doing laundry, put it on the cold cycle and save money on the electricity used to heat the water.

Check for leaks
Be vigilant in checking for leaks around the house. Check regularly and keep an eye on the water meter (if you have one) for any spikes that may occur.
If you dont need to, dont flush
This is not everyones favourite water saving tip, but if you can go without flushing the toilet every time, try to. Also, make sure you are not disposing of trash by flushing, rather use a rubbish bin.
Get a water tank
Harvesting water may cost in the initial setup, but you will be thrilled you have done it in the long run. Not to mention, if the water is treated correctly, it could save you where it hits the most your bank account.
Fit low water aerators on taps
Fit low water aerators on the taps to restrict the amount of flow and save water in the process.
Wash your car on the grass
If you are washing your car, firstly use a bucket and water and secondly, park on the grass. This means at least your grass will receive the runoff water and it will not be wasted.
South Africans are acknowledged as an optimistic nation who are smart about coming up with unique ideas to make things work. It is one of the things we pride ourselves on.
